What exactly is a CDL?

A CDL is a commercial driver's license. If you are interested in starting your career as a truck driver, you will need to get one of these. CDLs are issued through the Arizona Department of Transportation. Also, freight trucks are not the only trucks that require a CDL, but they are the only ones that pertain to Arizona Truck Driver Schools.

What tests am I going to have to take before I can get my CDL?

There are two tests you will need to take after your training. The first one is the written (knowledge) test, and the second is the driving (skills) test. In order to pass your skills test, you will need to know how to properly inspect the truck before driving. It is crucial that you've had plenty of driving practice before you take the skills test. How much time will be devoted to behind-the-wheel training?

Every Arizona Truck Driving School is different--at least to a small degree. But the Professional Truck Driver Institute has made a requirement of at least 44 hours of behind-the-wheel training. You can count on getting that minimum, and probably more.
How long does Truck Driving School usually last? I am a little eager to get started.
We understand the excitement that comes with starting something new. Luckily, the time is only about 3 to 4 weeks. But again, each school is different. Some will go a little longer than that; that is just the average. 

Is it mandatory for me to pass a drug test before I can get my CDL?

Yes, it is. Also, throughout your employment, your employer has the right to conduct random drug testing.

How often do I have to renew my CDL? Does it differ for each state?

No, it doesn't differ with each state. You need to renew your CDL every two years. Also, you will need to get a physical examination with each renewal. It is important to stay on top of these because if you don't renew while you still have you CDL, you have to apply all over again--rather than just filing a renewal form.

How often do I need to renew my hazmat endorsement?

Your hazmat endorsement needs to be renewed every five years, at least.  But keep in mind that some states might require you to renew your endorsement more often than every five years. And you will need to have a background check every single time that you want to renew your hazmat endorsement.
